Blending Ideas for Cold Climate Varieties - Thoughts on Itasca, Frontenac Blanc, La Crescent, Frontenac, St. Croix, Petite Pearl, Marquette, Verona, Louise Swenson…
At Northeastern Vine Supply, we are motivated by ideas of blending wines. Think about using Itasca as a solid base wine with low acidity and apple, pear and floral aromas that is blended with a small amount of bright and tropical Frontenac Blanc. La Crescent can add delicious apricot and lime aromas to a blend with L’Acadie Blanc or Itasca (but is also inviting on its own). Frontenac is a workhorse red in the vineyard, producing ample amounts of boldly flavored fruit with an acid backbone. Maybe you want to tone that acidity down a little or add some dimension to the nose and palette. Petite Pearl or St. Croix could be just the right tool. Marquette can add wonderful aromas of cassis, cherry and blackberry to a Petite Pearl based red wine. The added fruitiness compliments the savory qualities of Petite Pearl, bringing the finished acidity of the wine into balance. Verona can bring big flavors of raspberry and smokiness with some nice tannin to the game. What about blending it with a white?! Louise Swenson with its low acidity and grapefruit rind aroma?….There are no rules here, and I can say that blends of red and white grapes have a ton of potential.
